    Legislative Update

    Week 3

     1/21/19 - 1/25/19

Good morning, it was a HUGE week here, with several Bills related to Regional Fire Authorities and Fire Districts going to hearing (SB 17 / 20 ) and our Health and Safety Bill moving forward. (SB160)

Monday, we had 2 Hearings about RFA and the Central Valley FD / Belgrade Issue. It appears that BOTH will get out of committee.

Tuesday, we met with the Helena IR Newspaper and had an interview with Sen. McConnell.  Sen. Jon Tester addressed the House of Representatives and stated that it was time to take care of Firefighters, we were not expecting that, but we are definitely on the radar now! After the Tester speech, a Press conference was held to promote SB 160. Numerous conversations are taking place with Legislators from across the state and it feels like SB 160 is gaining support on both side of the isle!

Wednesday am we had a scheduled meeting with MMIA, one of our biggest opponents on the FF Safety Bill, about concerns of a Work Comp law. They will say that rates will skyrocket but our research shows otherwise. Contact was made with Sen Thomas (Stevi) about his Volunteer WC bill and had a positive Informational talk about our Bills. We again hosted the AFL-CIO Labor Lunch which was a Taco Bar. 😊

Thursday was a day of Senate hearings and collecting info for next week’s hearing.

Senate Bill 160, Firefighter Protection Act is scheduled for a Sub-committee hearing Tuesday the 29th at 830 am. Sen. Fitzpatrick is the Chair and I have developed a good working relationship with him.  He is also sponsoring SB 171 which is an anti FF Tobacco Bill.  We feel it would be hypocritical not to support this, as it directly relates to FF Health and Safety, but we are not sure if it has enough support to get anywhere.

Please get a hold of us with questions or concerns. We are tracking bills as they come out but let us know if you see something we missed or need to look at more thoroughly.

Thank you again for the opportunity to represent you in Helena,

    Dave, Brian, Joel
